Body Bag Bowl & Disease Ridge

Last weekend Caitlin and I stepped into one of the backcountry-oriented stores in Whistler Village. Caitlin exclaimed “All these prices are in Canadian? AND everything’s on sale?!” as she looked up the exchange rate and then started waving her credit card around shouting “Give me one of everything!”

Suddenly both equipped for backcountry skiing, yesterday we went out with a guided group for a little excursion. From the village we took the Blackcomb lifts and trails to get to the 7th Heaven lift & trail cluster, then struck out for Body Bag Bowl and Disease Ridge just southeast of the resort bounds. Four laps of the bowl took the bulk of the day, and then we skied back out to Whistler Village.

Trekking away from the resort area and a quick discussion about safe paths down the center of the bowl.

Styling Post Thumbnails
Post Thumbnails are given a class “wp-post-image”. They also get a class depending on the size of the thumbnail being displayed. You can style the output with these CSS selectors:

Heading up Disease Ridge, the south perimeter of the bowl, twice, each lap maybe 45–60 minutes climbing and, like, 2 minutes skiing down. Most of the day visibility was good for seeing hard obstacles but very flat light working against reading the snow for bumps and drops or avoiding vertigo.

About to swoop down the north perimeter of the bowl, basically just below the DOA couloir from Blackcomb Peak, graced with wonderful sun.

A view behind on the way out—Blackcomb peak at photo center and Body Bag Bowl the open slope on the right—then heading out through rolling glades and back down into heavy fog as we returned to 7th Heaven and the resort trails.

Caitlin’s after-action assessment of this adventure.
